Bought a new PC and want to move your Windows license to it? If your current license is Retail, this is allowed and quite simple.
OEM vs Retail — Quick Check
Open Command Prompt as admin and run:
slmgr.vbs /dli
If it says RETAIL channel, you can transfer. If OEM_DM, the license is tied to your original PC. See our Windows comparison.
Step 1 — Find Your Product Key
- PowerShell (run as admin):
(Get-WmiObject -Query "SELECT * FROM SoftwareLicensingService").OA3xOriginalProductKey
- NirSoft ProduKey — Free tool that lists all installed keys.
- Your purchase email from the reseller.
Step 2 — Deactivate the Old PC
- Open Command Prompt as admin.
- Run:
slmgr.vbs /upk - Run:
slmgr.vbs /cpky
Step 3 — Install Windows on the New PC
- Download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
- Create a bootable USB.
- Install Windows. Skip the product key step.
Step 4 — Activate with Your Key
- Open Settings → System → Activation.
- Click Change product key.
- Enter your Windows key.
- Click Activate.
If Activation Fails
Use the activation troubleshooter:
- Open Settings → Activation.
- Click Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account.
