Bought a new PC and want to move your Windows license to it? If your current license is Retail, this is allowed and quite simple.

OEM vs Retail — Quick Check

Open Command Prompt as admin and run:

slmgr.vbs /dli

If it says RETAIL channel, you can transfer. If OEM_DM, the license is tied to your original PC. See our Windows comparison.

Step 1 — Find Your Product Key

  • PowerShell (run as admin):
    (Get-WmiObject -Query "SELECT * FROM SoftwareLicensingService").OA3xOriginalProductKey
  • NirSoft ProduKey — Free tool that lists all installed keys.
  • Your purchase email from the reseller.

Step 2 — Deactivate the Old PC

  1. Open Command Prompt as admin.
  2. Run: slmgr.vbs /upk
  3. Run: slmgr.vbs /cpky

Step 3 — Install Windows on the New PC

  1. Download the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
  2. Create a bootable USB.
  3. Install Windows. Skip the product key step.

Step 4 — Activate with Your Key

  1. Open Settings → System → Activation.
  2. Click Change product key.
  3. Enter your Windows key.
  4. Click Activate.

If Activation Fails

Use the activation troubleshooter:

  1. Open Settings → Activation.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
  4. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
